The Joy of Creation

When I am in the studio creating I am fully immersed and often I do not even mark the passage of time except to lament that I have more that I want to say as an artist than I have hours in the day to say it.

Artist’s Statement.

I believe art originates in a person’s soul; therefore, I believe everyone is an artist. If we allow ourselves to be in the presence of art, without expectations or preconceived notions, it has the power to draw from both the creator and viewer a vast range of emotions. Art can bring people together by reflecting their lived experience or by teaching about the lived experiences of others. Art reveals similarities and differences of all kinds, which when we explore these, help us to understand life better. Art can give us the comfort of belonging and the discomfort of not understanding, or of understanding all too well. Art reveals the vastness of human experience. It can be beautiful, transcendent, and painful. Art can expose ugliness and truth, secrecy and lies. Art can confront us and make us confront ourselves. If we will risk being vulnerable in the presence of art, the experience will not leave us unchanged.

Bio

I am a multi-media artist with over two decades of experience as a professional artist and thirteen years of experience teaching in both formal and informal settings. I work in a variety of materials and techniques, ranging from traditional methods of working with fibers, metals, and paint, to more contemporary approaches in which these processes overlap and blend. I am inspired by science, math, and nature for the creation of my works of art and I bring a love of process to all my artmaking endeavors. Though rooted in other sources of inspiration, much of my work is autobiographical and heavily symbolic.

Workshops and Classes

I have over a decade of teaching experience in both formal and informal settings and can design classes for all age ranges and skill levels, from preschool to adult.

As an artist and art teacher I am very process driven and value exploration, innovation, understanding, and the learning of techniques in both my own practice and that of my students.

As a gallery teacher, I facilitate close-looking experiences that center the interests and voices of my audience, develop critical thinking, and encourage a sense of curiosity and wonder.

I am especially interested in teaching classes and workshops that explore the intersection between art and science and art and math, felting and other fiber arts processes, cold-connected metals and wire weaving, watercolor, silk painting, and close-looking and gallery teaching.
